![]() When we are spiritually dehydrated, a possible symptom is a quick temper ( Galatians 5:20). Lack of an adequate amount of water in someone’s body causes their body temperature to overheat. When we feel spiritually drained, our service is often affected. In Philippians 1:9-11, Paul’s prayer to the Philippians emphasizes the overflow of love that comes because of their growth in Christ. When someone suffers from dehydration, they often experience fatigue. When we are lacking spiritually, our speech lacks intentionality. Luke 6:45 states, “The good person out of the good treasure of his heart produces good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure produces evil, for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks” (ESV). Similarly, I think one characteristic of a lack of living water in someone’s life is unwholesome talk. One of the symptoms of physical dehydration is bad breath. Here are five signs that you may be experiencing spiritual dehydration in your own life. I believe that it is possible to become "dehydrated" in our spiritual lives without realizing it. Lord, we pray that you would continually change and transform our hearts, make our hearts more like yours, that our mouths might be the overflow of good treasure, that our mouths might bring forth good edification, speech that is seasoned with salt and Colossians 4 kind of way that’s gracious, that’s kind, that’s loving, that’s tender, that’s meek, that’s true. God, please help us to speak in ways that are not careless, in ways that are careful. Matthew 12:34–37 Leads Us to Pray for Our Words I just want you to think about your words today, yesterday, the day before, the words you’ll speak later on. What do your words say about your heart? He says, “For out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” This Verse Reminds Us Our Words Reflect Our Heart But that’s part of the point of what Jesus is saying here, is that our words are the overflow of our hearts. Now, obviously we know when we hear words like justified and condemned, we see those in the whole of scripture and what Jesus is teaching here aligns with what we see all throughout scripture that we’re justified before God only by faith in Christ, only by trust in Him, not by our works, good or bad.
